EvoGrid, Joomla, Game
27/11/09
Improved the daemon implementation, and implemented a grid-based temperature calculator, to allow identifying localized increases in temperature.
Also did some mangling of the Digital Space website code, so that my automatically generated date index only showed up on pages where there articles -
EvoGrid, Google Wave
26/11/09
After a few days which seemed to be more interruption then things to be interrupted, got back into the EvoGrid development. Implemented the server daemon and module design for separate analysis implementations.
Spent some time poking at Google Wave after being offered and invite (I don -
ionice
22/11/09
After more testing, ionice is out. It works at the block device level and the VM doesn't HAVE block devices, rather it is using vzfs, which is a shared FS (copy-on-write), and so all ionice operations fail. The ones that looked like they didn't where just having their errors fed into /dev/ -
ionice
22/11/09
The rolling on-host backup was giving errors about "ioprio_set: Operation not permitted". Apparently this is because Idle priority is a root-only action. (The backup should be running as root, but that's a different problem.) I did some research and found out that Idle priority is act -
ionice, DS VPS
21/11/09
After logging in this morning to a warning the DS VPS was highly loaded again, due to running the web stats generation, I looked into back-porting ionice to Etch and instead found which package it was in. In Etch it is in schedutils, while in Lenny it is in utils-linux.
I've now set -
Duplicity
20/11/09
The Duplicity backup run for the DS VPS has completed. 49GB of space is being used on the S3 storage, which is 51GB of content, compressed, encrypted and signed. Clearly a lot of our content is already in compressed formats, such as JPEG, AVI and so on.
The interesting part that I couldn& -
Duplicity
20/11/09
A note regarding Duplicity and failed full backups - It noticed the failed backup, displayed what file and block it was up to, and got back to it. -
VPS, Qmail & SpamAssassin, EvoGrid, OpenSim
18/11/09
Logged in this morning to a number of emails telling me the DS VPS had been shut down overnight. Investigated a little, after bringing it up. Logs suggest it was shut down, not failed or powered off in some manner. I haven't yet determined if this was in some way related to the backup being per -
Amazon S3, Duplicity and OpenSim
17/11/09
Spent the day setting up DS VPS backups to Amazon S3. No, I haven't brought into the "cloud" hype, they just have VERY cheap rates for data storage.
Set up Duplicity to perform the backups, which uses a clever use of the rysnc library to detect modified files, without needing the -
Joomla and OpenSim
16/11/09
Evaluated Joomla modules for splash/slide-show functionality for DS.com revamping. Working with the web developer to decide the best way to move the previously static and hand updated pages into categories to use Joomla's functionality for updating and adding new content.
Did work on -
Joomla and OpenSim
12/11/09
Finished off working on the Digital Space website Joomla add-on. They have an excellent method for overwriting display logic without needing to modify the core files.
Spent time upgrading my OpenSim expansion modules to work best with the latest codebase. This was primarily about updating -
Joomla, DiskLED, Ubuntu
11/11/09
Been working on getting the Digital Space Joomla set up to use the actual article management features, instead of just a collection of static pages. This is largely finding ways to identify what parts can use it, and where the existing content can be reworked. Obvious examples are news and events, a -
EvoGrid, OpenSim and Game
09/11/09
Working on getting the EvoGrid simulator to run repeatedly without crashing. There are several memory leaks in the container process that I'm in the process of tracking down. Each time one is fixed, the looping nature of the simulation makes another become more serious. Currently the simulation -
Back In The Habit
09/11/09
Got out of the habit of posting while moving house. Took three weeks for them to have the broadband connected (1 week exactly for the phone, 2 weeks to the day for the broadband).
